What makes a price go up
- Condition
- Some cracking and patching adds about 12%. Walls that need substantial filling, sanding and spot priming add about 30%.
- Colour change
- Going darker, or covering a strong colour with a pale one, often needs a third coat: 12–18% more.
- Ceiling height
- A 2.9 m period ceiling adds about 20% to the wall area of a standard room. Very tall stairwells need platforms or towers.
- Wallpaper
- Stripping adds £6–£10 per m², and more where it was hung straight onto unsealed plaster.
- Furniture
- Working around a full room takes longer than an empty one: up to 8%.
- Sash windows
- Each sash takes around three times as long as a casement to paint well.
What makes a price go down
- Painting several rooms at once. Setting up and protecting the floors is shared.
- Empty rooms, for example between tenancies.
- Keeping a similar colour, so two coats will do.
- Doing the preparation-heavy rooms first, then refreshing the rest.
Where these numbers come from
The ranges are calibrated against published 2026 UK price guides, which put London room painting at roughly £300–£1,200 and decorators' day rates at around £250–£350. We then applied Haringey room sizes and ceiling heights to them. We will keep adjusting them against real quotes from decorators working in the borough. The date at the top of the page tells you when they last changed.

Questions about price
How much does it cost to paint a room in Haringey?
As an example, a medium double bedroom (3.8 × 3.4 m, 2.4 m ceiling) with walls, ceiling, woodwork, one door and one window comes to roughly £530–£850 in good condition with a similar colour, including paint. Your own room is priced by the Instant Quote from your answers. Walls and ceiling alone start from the £350 minimum.
What is the day rate for a decorator in London?
Published 2026 guides put London decorators at roughly £250–£350 a day for labour, with experienced specialists higher. We price by the job rather than the day, so you know the total before work starts.
Why is a single room more expensive per room than a whole house?
Setting up, protecting floors and travelling cost the same whether one room is painted or six. Our rates reduce by about 7% once four or more rooms are included.
Does the price include paint?
Yes. The ranges include trade-quality paint and sundries. Premium brands or specialist finishes such as limewash or eggshell on walls cost more.
