The houses
Highgate's Haringey side mixes Georgian and early Victorian houses near the village with later Victorian and Edwardian streets further down the hill. There are also some substantial detached houses and interwar blocks. Original features are common and worth protecting: shutters, fanlights, fine cornicing, and panelled doors with their original ironmongery.
What that means for decorating
- Protection first. Original floors, fireplaces and joinery need thorough masking and dust control.
- Considered finishes. Estate eggshell or flat oil on woodwork, and breathable paints on original lime plaster, are sometimes the right choice. Ask in your quote.
- Conservation. Highgate conservation area covers much of the neighbourhood, and some houses are listed. Listed buildings need consent for some interior alterations, though like-for-like redecoration is normally fine. If in doubt, check with the council.
